The A to Z of the British Aircraft Carrier.

I will attempt to show a photo of every British Aircraft Carrier (in alphabetical order) ever built including Seaplane Carriers and other Ships that played an important role in Naval Aviation.
Even though nearly every ship carries a helicopter today I will omit Frigates,Destroyers, Survey Ships and RFA's etc as a matter of course.

It all started in Jan 1912 when an aircraft was launched from HMS Africa at anchor in the Medway. "The 1st British Seaboard aircraft take off"

A to Z of Aircraft Carriers.

After trials proved Naval Aviation was a viable prospect Seaplane Carriers were developed. These ships carried the seaplanesto their area of operation and they launched from the sea. Recovery was a more difficult prospect for the pilots, they had to land back on the water and were crane winched back on board.

THE MIGHTY ARK ROYAL (3)

The largest ship ever built at the time, she became the worlds most famous ship.
1st of a type, she was in effect the "blueprint" for every carrier ever built throughout the world since.

Laid Down - Sept 1935
Launched - April 1937
Commissioned - Dec 1938

A to Z of Aircraft Carriers.

During WW2 most of our Carriers were converted merchant ships known as "MAC Ships" (Merchant Aircraft Carriers). Many of these were provided on the "Lend, Lease" programme from America. The ships were all designated as Escort Carriers.

I notice on these ships especially on HMS AVENGER... was there any way of stowing the planes away?

I must admit, they are hard to see in that photo but all the MAC ships had at least 1 lift down to a after hangar. Guess it proves the camouflage works.

Heres a photo of Avenger where the lift can be seen.
