What a fine looking bunch of Britains finest Alf. I missed out on National Service by years and I'm glad really, I don't think I would have enjoyed it so much if it was forced upon me.
I volunteered instead and ended up doing 18 years.

My uncle, who was recently killed in a car crash was enrolled in the Sherwood Foresters for his Nation Service. This is one of the only photo's I have of him at the time. He's the corporal second from left. We have tried to find out what the medal is that they are all wearing but it has so far proved impossible. No five pointed maltese style cross has ever been issued to the british army. I have checked this through all sources available. It is possibly a sporting medal but as far as I'm aware, no medals apart from official one's may be worn on a uniform. Sadly it seems that the medal has long since dissapeared so we only have the picture to go on.

My wife found these pictures amongst the belongings of her father Bob just after he passed away.
He did his National Service with the Rayal army Ordnance Corps.
