700 Squadron is what is known as an IFTU (Intensive Flying Trials Unit).
When a new aircraft comes into service, it is put through it's paces on 700 NAS before going into full service. Pilots and ground crew are also able to familiarise themselves with the new aircraft.
From the formation of the squadron in 1940, letters have been added to the 700 to denote which aircraft is being evaluted. In most cases (not all) the letter represents the 1st letter of the aircraft name. There have been several repatitions of a letter over the years so knowing by the badge which aircraft is denoted is rather difficult.

These are the ones I have and fortunately I know what they are.

849 Squadron had 3 flights. The HQ flight which consisted of an OCU (Operational Conversion Unit) and a COD unit (Carrier Onboard Delivery). This flight used the standard 849 badge as previously shown. The other two Flights, "A & B" were carrier bourne flights and each had their own badges as follows.

Most English Electric Canberra's of the FAA were operated by FRADU at Yeovil (I'll cover FRADU at a later date) but during the Cold War, NATO required a Long Range Reconnaissance Squadron. It was decided to create a joint RAF, RN Squadron at RAF Watton in Cambridgeshire. 360 Squadron was born. This was the 1st ever official joint RAF. RN squadron in sevice.

All tactical operations for this squadron are controlled entirely by the Royal Marines although many of the pilots and ground crew are naval.

Canadian Naval Aviation.

Explaining the structure and formation of Canadian Naval Squadrons is in essence a long winded process.
Those squadrons whose badges I’ve shown under the FAA’s 800 Sqn section were set up directly by the Fleet Air Arm for Canadian use.
However, some squadrons already existed in the Canadian Navy at the outbreak of WW2 and these carried the same winged badges that we’ve previously seen. Most of these squadrons along with the 800’s continued in service after the war ended and formed what became the Royal Canadian Fleet Air Arm.
During WW2 the RAF also formed many squadrons for the Canadians and again, these squadrons continued after hostilities ended becoming part of the Royal Canadian Air Force. Of these squadrons, many had a maritime role such as Seaplane Sqn’s, Coastal Command, Air Sea Rescue and Anti Submarine and Anti Shipping Sqn’s etc’.
In 1968 the Canadians combined all the services to form what became the Royal Canadian Armed Forces. The FAA ceased to exist becoming part of the Air Force.
The powers that be recognised that a Naval and Maritime role was still required and by combining the former RCAF and FAA squadrons the “Maritime Air Group” was born.
In 2011 the Canadians reverted to a “Three Service” system but the Maritime Air Group continued as part of the Royal Canadian Air Force thus ending the Canadian Fleet Air Arm for evermore.

As for the badges, I will show both the RCFAA and the RCAF Maritime badges pre 1968 along with the updated badges of the RCFAA now under the Maritime Air Group.
